When I left school, I initially joined the MoD as an engineering technician apprentice, gaining invaluable practical experience. Inspired by my father’s engineering career, I went on to complete an Electrical Engineering degree at Cardiff University.

Biggest engineering challenge.

The biggest challenge I’ve faced is the delivery of One New Change in the City of London. At the time, it was the largest scheme in the capital and comprised of retail and office space housed within a five-sided glass box, totalling nearly 600,000 ft2. Constrained by St Paul’s heights, as well as a challenging sustainability strategy, the team responded by creating the largest ground-source energy system in Europe at the time. To be associated with one of London’s landmark buildings is a career high.

Engineering human experiences.

To deliver a scheme with the size and complexity of One New Change, it was necessary to champion teamwork. My role was to create a Hoare Lea team that could rise to any challenge, engage with the client’s vision and give that little bit extra to make all the difference. To see engineers flourish and develop was hugely rewarding; I believe this way of working is the backdrop to a truly sustainable business.
