RIBA Awards 2009

Winner South West Region - Scott Building, University of Plymouth
Architect: Nicholas Burwell Architects
Value: £4 million
The University of Plymouth's Scott Building houses the Faculty of Arts printing, media and photography departments.

Hoare Lea acted as the framework mechanical and electrical engineers responsible for the refurbishment and new extension for the building. Hoare Lea played a key role in developing a low energy and passive ventilation concept for the new extension.

Opening façade ventilators coupled with internal 'chimney' stacks and roof mounted windcatcher's provided the optimum solution to ventilate the mainly open plan teaching spaces. The north facing façade provided excellent daylight qualities and a low energy lighting scheme was introduced.

Room user guides were provided to each space explaining how to operate the ventilation system and lighting.

Hoare Lea Acoustics also provided advice on the refurbishment of the lecture theatres as well as advice on improving recording studios prior to them moving to this new arts department.
