One New Change, the City of London’s largest and newest shopping destination, opened on Thursday 28 October.
The City mall on Cheapside, in the heart of the City, includes Barbecoa, a new concept restaurant from Jamie Oliver and Adam Perry-Lang, an as yet unnamed restaurant from Gordon Ramsay, flagship fashion stores and unique one-off speciality shops, all set overlooking London’s most famous landmark, St Paul’s Cathedral. One New Change is also home to one of London’s highest public roof-top terraces, with spectacular new views of the cathedral and the London skyline.
Designed by internationally-renowned Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, with Sidell Gibson as delivery architects, One New Change comprises 31,000 square metres commercial and 21,000 square metres retail space. The development is set to lead the transformation of the City into a seven-day shopping and leisure destination.
Hoare Lea designed the office and retail MEP systems for One New Change and provided specialist advice regarding vertical transportation, together with sustainability and energy systems expertise.
Working with a highly complex geometric form, One New Change complies with Part L 2006 and will realise the Mayor’s target of generating 10 per cent of its energy needs from renewable sources. A pioneering energy system combining open loop bore holes (which extract and discharge water from the underground aquifer) with 219 closed loop energy piles, will maximise the renewable energy contribution.
One New Change was awarded the highest accolade in the 2010 MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards after being announced as both Overall and Mixed Use Winner.
Robert Noel, MD of Land Securities London Portfolio commented: “One New Change has been designed in sympathy with its rich architectural surroundings. The City mall will bring high-street brands, independent shops and unique concept restaurants to the City, to complement its world-class financial services and the area’s extensive repertoire of museums, art galleries and breath-taking architecture.”
