Mills Bakery wins Conservation Award

Mills Bakery, a Grade I listed building and home to our Plymouth office, has won the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) South West Award 2011 for Best Building Conservation scheme.

Mills Bakery is located in a former Royal Naval victualling yard, and having spent its early life ensuring ships are fully stocked with supplies, is one of the most important historic military buildings in the UK. The landmark mixed-use development comprises 87 luxury apartments, 1700m2 of retail space and more than 2500m2 of office accommodation integrated into the existing listed building.

Hoare Lea used an MEP design solution that successfully married the need for modern services with a respect for the historic nature of the building, with office services concealed within the existing roof and new boiler flues integrated within an existing chimney.

The RICS Awards celebrate the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the environment. The conservation category honours the conservation of an individual historic building, structure or group of structures that has been renovated to have a new use or restored to its original use.

All eyes are now on the RICS ‘Grand Final’ Awards announced on 21 October 2011 at the Savoy, London.
