Hoare Lea wins 'Best Use of IT' and 'Training Initiative of the Year' at the Building Services Awards 2009

Hoare Lea won 'Best Use of IT' and 'Training Initiative of the Year' at the Building Services Awards 2009, which took place at the London Hilton, Park Lane, on Wednesday 17 June.

The 'Best Use of IT' award was presented to Hoare Lea for its work on the converged network infrastructure at Cabot Circus. The judges commented:

'A decade ago, when Bristol's Cabot Circus scheme was conceived, the client wanted a state-of-the-art fully integrated network infrastructure. Hoare Lea brought together 20 disparate electronic systems including CCTV, billing, energy metering and fault reporting to create a converged network infrastructure (CNI). Key to the successful design was developing a scheme that was cost comparable to traditional disparate systems.'

The CNI was also applauded by the client. Neil Pennell, head of sustainability and engineering at developer Land Securities, said:

'The common network IP infrastructure is a true integration of building automation and information technology systems and signifies a step change in the evolution of intelligent buildings in the retail sector.'

Hoare Lea's wide range of professional development activities in 2008 was recognised through the 'Training Initiative of the Year' award. The judges said:

'Hoare Lea's training spans numerous initiatives. Its graduate conference, Creativity for Sustainability, was attended by 80 delegates in 2008. A graduate exchange programme with architect Broadway Malyan saw 40 secondments take place across 14 offices in the two organisations. Each two week secondment is based on exercises that give graduates an understanding of issues from another perspective.

'Four sustainability workshops were held in 2008, as part of the CPD technical update programme, covering passive design, heating and hot water systems, electrical systems and low energy cooling. Finally, a management development programme offers support and advice on strategy, communication and mentoring for all levels of management.'

Hoare Lea was also runner-up in three other categories: 'Large Consultancy of the Year'; 'Major Project of the Year' for Cabot Circus; and 'Project of the Year' for both Warwick Digital Laboratory and the Health, Exercise & Biological Sciences Building at Loughborough University.
