Earth Sciences building shortlisted for S-Lab Award

Oxford University’s new Earth Sciences laboratory building has been shortlisted for an S-Lab award in the ‘Environmental Improvement’ category.

The S-Lab awards showcase safe, successful and sustainable laboratory best practice, aiming to highlight and share best practice in laboratory design, management and use.

At Oxford University’s Earth Sciences laboratory building, a ground source energy system (GSES) was selected as an appropriate technology to reduce carbon emissions. The client, consulting engineer, GSES installer and mechanical contractor all shared a determination to demonstrate the potential of this technology, and have successfully overcome a number of reliability and performance issues since initial commissioning. The system now delivers greater carbon emission savings than anticipated and the team has gathered a wealth of data on the energy performance of both the ground source energy system and the building as a whole.

Ian Durbin, Partner, Hoare Lea commented: ‘We are delighted to be shortlisted for this prestigious award, which recognises the outstanding work of the team at Earth Sciences. Through their diligence we have shown that a ground source energy system can generate significant savings in carbon dioxide emissions in a laboratory building.’

Shortlisted applications will be reviewed by a distinguished judging panel and the awards ceremony will take place during the 2013 Effective Laboratory conference at Liverpool University on 19 June.

Canada Water Library wins Civic Trust Award 2013

We are pleased to announce that Canada Water Library in Southwark has won both a Civic Trust Award and the Selwyn Goldsmith Special Award for Universal Design.

Supported by the Centre for Accessible Environments, the Civic Trust Awards are one of the oldest built environment award schemes in Europe. They recognise the best in the built environment, from architecture to planning, townscape to infrastructure.

The Selwyn Goldsmith Award, named after the architect and founding figure of universal design, Selwyn Goldsmith, recognises projects that have demonstrated excellent universal design principles.

'The ambition of the client, to establish a universally accessible place for the community to use, has been triumphantly met'
Becky Goldsmith, Selwyn Goldsmith Award Panel Member.

According to the Civic Trust, Canada Water Library is 'incredibly successful, managing to redefine the function of a traditional library into that of a hub which offers a multitude of services to the whole community. All facilities are thoughtfully designed and clever environmental systems have produced an environment that is imaginative, elegant and beautifully lit. Inventive approaches to providing universal accessibility have created a library, coffee bar, theatre, learning, study and administrative areas that have excellent functionality. The enthusiasm of the staff for their building and the users of all ages coexisting comfortably, show the effort made by the client to involve all groups in the brief. This has resulted in a welcoming civic facility that is clearly enjoyed and well used by all. Canada Water Library brings to the East End of London an iconic community asset that is an exemplar of Universal Design.’

Hoare Lea wins DECC Carbon Capture and Storage Innovation competition

A consortium comprising Hoare Lea, Future Environmental Technologies (FET), Solutia UK ltd – a subsidiary of Eastman Chemicals, DB Core Systems and Malvern Executive has won a research project grant to assist with the investigation of the performance of a unique scalable carbon capture and storage (CCS) system.

Project Coral is one of only thirteen winners of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) £20m CCS Innovation competition for projects, which aims to reduce the cost of CCS development.
CCS is a mitigation technology essential in tackling global climate change, and ensuring a secure energy supply. Traditionally, the technology captures carbon dioxide from fossil fuel power stations, transporting it via pipelines for offshore storage in deep underground structures, such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs, and deep saline aquifers.

In contrast, Project Coral is a first-of-its-kind electro-chemically based sequestration technology that aims to remediate carbon using the FET developed ‘Carbon Water eXchange (CWx)’ capture technology. The 30-month project, which has received one of the larger DECC grants, will initially retro-fit a pilot CWx unit into the Combined Heat and Power system at the Newport factory of Solutia UK ltd – a subsidiary of Eastman Chemicals. The system will use waste water to capture CO₂ and in the process produce potable water and a range of valuable by-products.

As Project Coral develops, Hoare Lea will provide mechanical and electrical engineering advice and design expertise together with research and analytical support.

Nick Cullen, Partner, Hoare Lea said:

‘It is not often that a technology comes along that has the potential to deliver such far-reaching benefits. CWx is an innovative scaleable technology, which has the potential to be integrated into or retrofitted onto building systems, in order to capture carbon. We are delighted to be part of the team delivering this exciting project.’

Speaking about the DECC £20m CCS Innovation competition, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Edward Davey said:

‘Carbon Capture and Storage is a huge opportunity for our world class research industry. Through the projects we have selected, pioneering companies and universities will be able to create new jobs and expand their markets.’

Land Securities and Hoare Lea shortlisted in Sustain Awards 2013

Land Securities and Hoare Lea have been shortlisted in the ‘Communication’ category of the Sustain Magazine Awards 2013 for the Low Carbon Fit Out Guide: Retail 2012.

The Sustain Magazine Awards for Sustainability, Business and the Built Environment, now in their 5th year, celebrate the standout achievements and successes in the field of Sustainability.

Produced in collaboration with Land Securities, the Low Carbon Fit-out Guide: Retail 2012 provides guidance for retailers and their designers on how low carbon fit-outs and energy savings can be achieved through efficient design in new and existing retail developments.

The Guide includes up-to-date information on lighting technologies and sustainable design. It also includes advice on the recent and future changes to relevant legislation and national policy, together with a checklist to help make sure all the opportunities to reduce energy use have been considered.

A major driver for retailers is rising energy prices, so worked examples to illustrate the potential cost savings that can be achieved through energy-efficient design and operation of a store have been included. Also incorporated is a ‘Green Building Guide’, which provides help on how to achieve the best possible BREEAM rating by improving the environmental performance of the retail fit-out design.

Hoare Lea wins at ACE Engineering Excellence Awards 2012

The Gladstone Link, Bodleian Library, Oxford University has won the Building Services (Medium Firm) category at the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) Engineering Excellence Awards 2012. Westminster Magistrates’ Court was also highly commended in the same category. The awards ceremony took place at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square on Wednesday 23 May.

Hoare Lea acted as mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) engineering consultants on both projects. In addition, Hoare Lea supplied specialist lighting design services to the Gladstone Link, and acoustics, fire engineering and BREEAM assessment services to Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Now in their fourth year, the Engineering Excellence Awards have become a well-recognised symbol of success within consultancy engineering. Winners and commendable mentions showcase the high standards the sector can achieve all around the world and recognise the best in the business.

Winner - The Gladstone Link, Bodleian Library, Oxford
The Bodleian Libraries form the largest library system in the UK. Now known as the Gladstone Link, the Underground Book Store beneath Radcliffe Square in Oxford, has been converted into two floors of library space housing 240,000 books. The project demonstrates how integrated design and involved clients can produce stunningly creative spaces, even within the constraints of a challenging building.

Highly Commended - Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Marylebone Road, London
Westminster Magistrates’ Court is a major new public building that consolidates three central London magistrates’ courts into a modern centre. Facilities include ten new courtrooms, judicial offices, public court halls and consultation rooms.

The BREEAM ‘Excellent’ flagship building has successfully realised a reduced carbon footprint through an innovative use of aquifer coupling, free cooling and active thermal mass. A collaborative approach ensured the solution exceeded expectations and set a new benchmark for the environmental design of court buildings.

ACE chief executive, Nelson Ogunshakin OBE, commented:

‘This year’s awards were highly competitive with a record number of entries and projects from around the world undertaken by engineers in this country. It is a wonderful testament to the remarkable vision and expertise of our world-leading sector.’

Congratulations to everyone involved in both projects.

BCO Regional Awards 2012 - Hoare Lea wins three awards

Three Hoare Lea projects were announced as winners at the BCO South West, Thames Valley and South Wales Regional Awards on Thursday 10 May 2012. The prestigious awards, held at the At-Bristol museum, provide recognition for top quality design and celebrate excellence in office space.

Mills Bakery, Plymouth was awarded the best ‘Refurbished/Recycled’ award. The Grade I listed Mills Bakery is located in Royal William Yard, a former Royal Naval victualling yard and one of the most important historic military buildings in the UK.

This mixed-use development comprises 87 luxury apartments, retail space and more than 2,500m2 of office accommodation. The design solution successfully married the need for modern services with a respect for the historic nature of the building, with office services concealed within the existing roof and new boiler flues integrated within an existing chimney.

Horizon House, Bristol won the award for best ‘Corporate Workplace’. The Environment Agency’s national office is one of the greenest office buildings in the UK. It won the 2010 Best BREEAM Office Award with a rating of 85.06% - the highest awarded to an office building under the 2006 criteria.

The building has a low-energy design system including ground source heat pumps, solar panels and photovoltaics that meet 17.5% of the building’s energy needs. The result is a commercially viable building, built to the highest environmental standards, within a city centre location.

Finally, the Bristol and Bath Science Park won the’ Commercial Workplace’ award. Located on a 59 acre site, the Science Park includes flexible offices, research space and laboratories. Careful site design has enabled the high-quality buildings to be located in close proximity, while being surrounded by large, open and attractive shared green areas.

BCO Regional Judging Chairman, Mark Alker Stone, Director at AWW commented:

“We would like to congratulate all entries, especially the winners, who have truly left their mark on the local built and architectural office environment. There are some inspiring workplaces in the region that exude quality design, originality of concept and have the positive effect of lifting the spirits of those who work in these places.”

All eyes are now on 2 October when the winners from the Regional Awards go on to compete at a national level, in a bid to win the ‘Best of the Best’ award.

Hoare Lea provides consultancy services for The Ashmolean Museum

Hoare Lea has provided mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) consultancy services to a £5 million redevelopment of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The project has created six new galleries to display the Museum’s world-renowned collections of Ancient Egypt and Nubia (present day Sudan), including the Shrine of Taharqa (c 680 BC), built at Kawa in Sudan.

Designed by Rick Mather Architects, the 1,016m² redevelopment included the refurbishment of four existing Egyptian galleries within a Grade II listed building, along with the transformation of the Ruskin Gallery, which previously housed the Ashmolean Shop, into a further gallery to accommodate the Predynastic holdings. The project also involved the relocation of the shop into a newly converted space next to the café on the lower ground floor.

New openings link the rooms and the galleries take visitors on a chronological journey covering more than 5000 years of human occupation of the Nile Valley. Collections are presented under the themes of Egypt at its Origins; Dynastic Egypt and Nubia; Life after Death in Ancient Egypt; The Amarna ‘Revolution’; Egypt in the Age of Empires; and Egypt meets Greece and Rome. The project has allowed objects that have been in storage for decades to be exhibited, more than doubling the number of mummies and coffins on display.

Energy efficiency was a key consideration and Hoare Lea worked closely with the team to design creative solutions within the listed building. Design features include: a low velocity ventilation system, which can adapt to visitor occupancy levels while providing a stable thermal and humidity controlled environment for the Egyptian artefacts; a concealed fire alarm system; display lighting control systems; security and access systems; and the integration of the specialist environmentally controlled display cases.

“Professor Andrew Hamilton, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, said, "These remarkable collections are among the most important outside Egypt and one of the Ashmolean’s most popular attractions. With an exciting series of new galleries, the redevelopment transforms opportunities for using the collections for teaching and research at all levels, and the way they are enjoyed, cared for and integrated within the wider Museum.”

Hoare Lea appointed to The International Quarter, Stratford City, London

Hoare Lea has been appointed by Lend Lease and London & Continental Railways (LCR) as one of the seven top engineering consultants to join the design panel for The International Quarter (TIQ), a new £1.3 billion commercial district in Stratford City, London.

The other engineers providing MEP services to the panel are BDP Environmental Engineering, Foreman Roberts and Grontmij. In addition, structural services will be provided by Arup, Curtins and Ramboll.

TIQ will be one of the UK’s largest mixed-use developments and will transform the Olympic Park by creating a vibrant and dynamic commercial hub in the heart of Stratford City. The development will comprise four million sq ft of Grade ‘A’ office space, a new hotel and 350 homes.

Outline planning consent has been secured and construction can start following the completion of the Olympic Games, providing possession to occupiers in 2015.

The architectural element of the panel comprises BDP, Gensler, Pringle Brandon Drew, TP Bennett and Woods Bagot.

Matt Beasley, Project Director at Lend Lease added: “These practices have been appointed to the design panel for the commercial workplace element of the TIQ Stratford City project. This means they are part of a team put together to deliver the scheme in the years ahead. With up to 4 million sq ft of workplace to deliver, the panel approach means the development team can match firms to individual plots and deliver concurrently”.

LICA wins BREEAM Higher Education Award 2012

The Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) has won the Higher Education award at the BREEAM Awards 2012.

The Awards honour the most successful sustainable buildings in the industry and are made annually to the projects that achieve the highest scores under BREEAM – the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings.

The £10m LICA building at Lancaster University has already achieved the distinction of being the UK’s first higher education project to be rated ‘Outstanding’ for both design stage and post construction review. As mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) engineers and BREEAM Assessors, we worked closely with the client, Lancaster University, and the project team, which included architect Sheppard Robson, to achieve this rating.

An exciting purpose built facility, LICA combines teaching and research activities in Art, Design, Film Studies, Music and Theatre Studies across a range of interactive and flexible spaces.

From the outset of the LICA project there was a focus on passive design to reduce energy demand. The pre-fabricated and cross-laminated timber construction provides high levels of air tightness and contributes to low U-values, two factors which were central to achieving the Energy Performance Asset Rating of 21, Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Band A.

Solar photovoltaics and rainwater harvesting both provide operational feedback via live information displays in reception, and energy sub-metering and lighting controls further encourage effective energy management. The building also features low water-use sanitary fittings; 75% efficient thermal wheel heat recovery to maximize energy efficiency; and a link to the campus district heating with CHP.

Mark Swindlehurst, Lancaster University’s Director of Facilities said:

“We are delighted that Lancaster has been recognised as a pioneer of sustainable building in the Higher Education sector. We see BREEAM as the yardstick for the environmental performance of our buildings and the effect they have on the wider environment. Central to the success of the LICA project was the collaborative approach embraced by Hoare Lea and the project team – this enabled the delivery of a truly ‘Outstanding’ building that fully meets our commitment to sustainability.”

London Office moves to King’s Cross

Hoare Lea’s London office has recently secured new premises at the new King’s Cross development in Central London.

The London office move is planned for late 2012, with the 22,000 sq ft Western Transit Shed offering a superb, modern and spacious working environment for what will be the firm’s flagship office.

We are currently working closely with the developer, Argent, on details of the design for the new building, ensuring that our 165 staff can maximise all of the possible benefits of the move.

The Western Transit Shed combines a mix of both contemporary design and heritage, so it is fitting that the move will take place during the year in which Hoare Lea celebrates its 150th anniversary.

Initial construction work has already started on the building and is scheduled to be completed in time for the move at the end of 2012.

Speaking on the move, Miles Freeman, Managing Partner, London office, said:

“King’s Cross met all of the aspirations we set at the start of our search for new premises, especially in terms of quality of design and commitment to sustainability, both of which are extremely important to us at Hoare Lea. King’s Cross is a superb development, with a well-developed sense of place, in a central, incredibly well connected location.”

Sheldonian Theatre Wins Top Award

The University of Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre triumphed at the Oxford Preservation Awards last week by winning the Building Conservation Award.

The remarkable building, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is a fine example of a Grade I restored theatre and is used by the University for ceremonies and concerts.

Designed by Hoare Lea’s Lighting Group, the theatre was lit from concealed positions and the chandeliers, wall and column mounted fittings and pendant luminaires were all removed. The result is an impressive lighting scheme that is both sympathetic to the architecture and practical for a variety of events that take place there.

The Oxford Preservation Trust Awards are in their 34th year and recognise projects that improve and conserve Oxford’s built and natural environment. Another of our projects, Earth Sciences, was also awarded a certificate for the New Building category.

Hoare Lea starts its search for the UK’s finest graduates

Hoare Lea has launched its 2012 Graduate and Placement Campaign in a search for the next intake of future engineering talent. The campaign for graduates and placements is an important activity for the firm, focused on sustaining a pipeline of great engineers to continue the firm’s long established reputation for quality and excellence.

Hoare Lea have a highly regarded and accredited graduate training programme which has allowed the firm to continue to attract and develop some of the best engineers in the industry.
