The Charles Carter Building at Lancaster University, London’s One New Change and ExCel Phase 2 all won at the RIBA Awards and LDSA Awards held on the 19 May 2011.
Not only did One New Change win a London Region RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) award, it also won the LDSA (London District Surveyors Association) award for ‘Best Commercial Project’ on the same day. One New Change has won a wealth of awards since it opened in October 2010 with Hoare Lea having designed the office and retail MEP systems and provided specialist vertical transportation, sustainability and energy systems expertise.
The Charles Carter Building was awarded a RIBA award for the North West Region, for which Hoare Lea carried out MEP design and BREEAM assessment on the 4000m2 building. It received a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and will act as the University’s impressive 6* Management School.
ExCeL Phase 2 won the LDSA Award for ‘Best Technical (fire safety) Innovation’. This particular building was designed by Grimshaw Architects and is an extension of the existing exhibition centre in London’s Docklands. A holistic fire strategy was used involving zone and field modelling (CFD), evacuation modelling and finite element structural analysis. ExCeL has been classed as a ‘beacon’ project which will allow the procedure developed by Hoare Lea Fire Engineering to be implemented in fire strategies and approval processes for other developments around the world.
Congratulations to everyone involved.
