BCO Awards 2011 – South West, Thames Valley and South Wales Region
Three Hoare Lea projects were announced as winners at the British Council for Offices (BCO) South West, Thames Valley and South Wales Regional Awards on 19 May 2011. The prestigious awards were held at the At-Bristol museum, celebrating excellence in office buildings.
Yell, Reading was awarded the ‘Fit out of Workplace’ award with its use of artwork, bright colours and modern interior design creating a vibrant and stylish work environment. Hoare Lea carried out the Category A and B engineering service design, which included enhancements to the shell and core engineering systems.
Kestrel House, Wallingford won the award for Best ‘Corporate Workplace’. The BREEAM ‘Excellent’ building was commended for its innovative environmental design which included solar water heating and rainwater harvesting.
Finally, the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated One Glass Wharf in Bristol won the Best ’Commercial Workplace’ award. The new Burges Salmon offices were commended by the judges for making use of a river adjacent to the building for rejecting heat from the building cooling plant. Hoare Lea was appointed to undertake the detailed design for the bespoke fit-out of the tenanted area.
The judges felt that all projects demonstrated a genuine commitment to environmentally friendly and energy efficient design. A fantastic achievement for everyone involved.
BCO Awards 2011 – Midlands and East Anglia Region
Hoare Lea also had a successful day at the BCO Midlands and East Anglia Regional Awards, held on 26 May 2011.
Best ‘Commercial Workplace’ was awarded to SportPark, Loughborough University, which displayed strong environmental credentials, making use of natural ventilation and ground source heat pumps. This resulted in the building achieving a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ award and the judges described the building as “iconic”, and a “great addition” to the University of Loughborough.
1 Lancaster Circus won the award for Best ‘Refurbished/Recycled Workplace’ with, a project which developed a tired, redundant building into a contemporary workplace which its employees and the people of Birmingham can be proud of. The building encourages an open collaborative working culture and has enabled the council to move from 13 office buildings into one building at Lancaster Circus.
The Severn Trent Centre in Coventry picked up the award for Best ‘Corporate Workplace’, the Severn Trent Centre demonstrated excellent sustainability credentials.
All eyes are now on 11 October when the winners from the Regional Awards go on to compete at a national level, in a bid to win the ‘Best of the Best’ award.
