A ‘groundbreaking’ ceremony was held on 2 August to officially mark the start of construction on the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford.
Hoare Lea started working on the project four years ago and is undertaking mechanical, electrical and public health engineering, as well as acoustics, fire engineering, lighting, virtual engineering and vertical transportation.
The building is a new landmark for the University and the world of mathematics and will bring together researchers from three separate buildings into a single dedicated faculty. The prestigious event was attended by senior members of the University and representatives from the project team including Chris Jones, Catherine McDonald and Gael Vilatarsana from Hoare Lea.
The building is due to be completed in September 2013, making it one of the first buildings on the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter (ROQ) site. Other Hoare Lea projects on the ROQ site include Somerville College and Radcliffe Infirmary.
The Institute building has been designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects and is being constructed by Laing O’Rourke. Key features of the building include a ground source energy installation with over 100 boreholes, displacement ventilation to all lecture theatres and seminar rooms and a passive cooling strategy to all office spaces.
