BREEAM Awards 2010

BREEAM Offices - Horizon House

Horizon House, the Environment Agency's new corporate office in Bristol, won the 'BREEAM Office' award at the BREEAM Awards 2010 at Ecobuild, London on 3rd March. The Awards honour the most successful sustainable buildings in the industry.

Hoare Lea acted as the MEP consulting engineers for the project and also provided specialist acoustic and fire engineering advice and virtual engineering services.

The buildings shortlisted for the Awards were drawn from those achieving Excellent ratings under various BREEAM schemes during 2009. To gain an Excellent rating developments must earn most of the performance credits available in the areas of: energy, materials, waste, water, ecology, pollution, transport, management, and health and wellbeing.

Horizon House scored a superb 85% under BREEAM the highest rating achieved for an office building in the UK under BREEAM 2006. Developed by Westmark, the office admirably meets the brief for a commercially viable building that also has the highest environmental standards - these were key to securing the Environment Agency's tenancy.

Receiving the award, Euan Creswell, managing director of Westmark said:

"We're very proud of Horizon House - not only because of its highly sustainable features, but because it's being delivered to a competitive budget in a city centre location. Winning the BREEAM Award 2010 is fantastic recognition of our team effort with the Environment Agency, and will help us spread the word that going green doesn't have to cost the earth and can create city centre offices that are great places to work."

Graham Ledward, Director of Resources at the Environment Agency said: "Westmark has gone to great lengths to meet our requirements for an affordable City centre office with exceptionally high environmental standards. By relocating to Horizon House, the Environment Agency will save around 10% every year on operational costs, an estimated £180,000 saving per year. This demonstrates how organisations can work with developers to build exceptional offices which meet their needs whilst reducing their impact on the environment. We exhort other developers and organisations to follow this lead."
