Having joined Hoare Lea as a graduate mechanical engineer in 2006, I always had the support, inspiration, and opportunities I needed to progress my career and develop as a professional. Now 12 years later I’m a team leader and associate, leading teams of engineers to deliver projects. I also provide mentoring and leadership to enable today’s graduates to become chartered engineers.

I joined Hoare Lea as a graduate mechanical engineer in 2001 after graduating in Building Design Engineering from Strathclyde University. Following a varied seven years of fantastic projects, developing my engineering and project leadership skills, I transferred to the Sustainability Group. Now, as the partner lead for Sustainability, I look after a group of hugely talented individuals all striving to make a positive impact in the industry and beyond.

During my Master’s degree in Engineering Design, I undertook a placement at Hoare Lea. My favourite project worked on was a local community centre development. I enjoyed the level of responsibility given as well as the experience and knowledge represented in my design team and colleagues in general. I returned to Hoare Lea as a graduate in 2022 and enjoy working with some great people as well as being involved in STEM outreach, organising work experience for young people.

Hoare Lea works in a variety of sectors and it’s this diversity that attracted me to the company. The graduate scheme offers support to both your technical skills and personal development. I started as a graduate 2019 and the company trusted me to work on time-critical projects. I am proud to say that I was able to contribute to the Welsh Nightingale Hospitals, an experience that will be invaluable as I progress in my career.

I joined Hoare Lea as a graduate in 1999 after graduating with an MEng in Industrial Engineering from the University of Surrey. I was afforded great opportunities to learn, develop, and lead projects and teams in the early stages of my career and obtain my CEng. I am now the Managing Partner of the Bournemouth office which encompasses many responsibilities including overseeing the development of future generations of leaders of the firm.

Hoare Lea has a diverse portfolio of projects and specialism’s which has allowed for a lot of cross-collaboration both internally and externally. Since joining in 2017, there has been a wealth of knowledge and support from my direct team and the practice. I’ve had opportunities to work and lead on a range of project disciplines, which has given me invaluable experience for my career.

Our IPD (Initial Professional Development) Scheme provides mentoring, support, guidance and training to set you off on the right path – one where you are thinking about how you can continually grow and develop.

Whether you join as a trainee, apprentice, technician or graduate, the scheme will guide you as you build the knowledge, skills and experience you need to practice as respected professionals in your field. For those working towards Professional Registration, the IPD Scheme will guide you to know when you are ready to apply and provide you with a portfolio of evidence to support your application.

As leaders in our field, we know that our continued success is because of our people. We recognise and celebrate this with our annual ‘Us at our best’ awards, which has a category, especially for our ‘Rising Stars’.
